Water-logged Bed!

Posted in Gardening at 4:39 pm by vicii

When I went out to check on the garden this morning I found that I have a seriously waterlogged bed!  Currently in this bed I have planted onions and garlic.  There may be some leeks in there but Max has attacked the plant so I’m not sure if any of the seedlings survived and also I planted two lettuce that my dad gave me.

One of these pictures shows the bed and another shows the extent of the water-loggedness (is that a word?) Please don’t ask why there are three pictures, I got carried away and now I can’t delete what is in the gallery !!

Our neighbours have mentioned that in winter the whole of the bottom of the garden gets water-logged (we have very heavy clay soil) and so since this is where my veg plot is, I need to have a good think on how to combat this problem ready for winter – here comes the internet search………….

Gardening Update

Posted in Gardening tagged , , , at 3:38 pm by vicii

I’ve managed to do quite a bit in the garden over the last few weeks.  First of all though Max escaped so I bought lots of chicken wire and tree stakes so we could secure the garden; there were gaps in the hedge between our house and the neighbours so we had to seal it back up. Although it might sound like an annoying thing to have to do, it was actually good news for me because I wanted to separate off the bottom of the garden for my vegetable patch and therefore I had the chicken wire left over to do it.  Unfortunately there were no tree stakes (this worked a treat instead of trying to figure out what type of wood I needed) left over but there was some old timber down the side of the garage and so I used that instead.   All that remains is for me to buy an arch (I want this since it will add a feature to the two separate parts of the garden) and sort out a gate – currently Max devours practically anything that he can get his mouth around so I want to be able to fence this part of the garden.

With Max taking such an interest in the garden I haven’t planted the things that I wanted to plant, since I know that once they start growing he will just eat them!  I planted out my onions, garlic and leeks – I can not longer see any leeks so they have obviously been eaten, and the tops of the onions and garlic have definitely been nibbled; it’s just a good job that I started them off in the greenhouse so at least they had a few roots to anchor them down 🙂

Having said that I have planted some carrot, parsnip and beetroot seeds today.  I have no idea whether they will survive or not but I have sown them in the raised bed near to the house (the raised bed being better for the roots since I have heavy clay soil that I want to add lots of manure to at the end of this year ready for rotating the beds next year).  Hopefully I will have more of a chance of shooing Max off the bed if he tries to start digging it up since it is close to the house instead of right at the bottom of the garden.

A bit late (I’ve had a lot going on recently!) but I’ve finally gotten around to replanting my tomatoes into bigger pots ready for the summer and have also replanted the marigolds that I had sown earlier.  Some of then are still in the greenhouse a companions to the tomatoes and the rest have gone in the raised bed at the bottom patio along with my courgettes.  I have also potted on my basil and coriander, or at least some of them since I still have more to do but Izzy woke up and needed some attention so I had to stop.

And finally, the blueberry bush is looking really good; some flower buds are starting to form and my strawberries are also looking good – I’m just waiting for them to ripen, but I’m keeping quiet about them so I can keep them for myself….

More Plants

Posted in Gardening tagged , , at 9:17 am by vicii

My parents bought my OH a hanging basket cascade thing for his birthday which will look really pretty when it is full of plants and they are in bloom in the summer, however I have been concentrating on vegetables and therefore haven’t bought any bedding plants so I needed to pull my finger out on this to either get some seeds to grow or get some plants whilst they were still small and cheap….

Hanging Baskets

Fortunately my dad told me that they were selling bedding plants in Wilkinsons which were good value – for smaller plug plants they have a 3 for £5 offer or for slightly bigger ones a 2 for £5 offer – therefore I spent £15 and got lots of plants; geraniums, lobielia, petunias, fushias, and some more that I can’t recall the name of!  So these are all in the greenhouse, currently still in their little modules since I had a hectic day yesterday. I was hoping to transplant them today along with digging the beds that need doing – however the weather is awful for digging so that may have to wait until tomorrow so I might leave the transplanting until then as well.  Plus this has the advantage that my OH isn’t at work so I can just concentrate on the garden instead of worrying that Izzy will need attending to.

Also, I’ve had a busy week this week so would like to spend today just relaxing – that is allowed isn’t it?!

Potting Up

Posted in Gardening tagged , , , at 9:01 am by vicii

I went out to the garden centre yesterday to buy some compost and treated myself to a few other things….

Whilst I was there I also bought some herbs, strawberry plants, a blueberry and gooseberry bush and some onion, garlic and potato sets – All items that I needed anyway so it wasn’t that much of a treat (well maybe the two fruit bushes were!)

I also managed to sow some seeds; namely marigolds, tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, aubergines, basil and courgettes.  I have been saving the empty toilet rolls to sow my peas in, but completely forgot to bring them down so I haven’t sown any peas yet (I didn’t think trampling mud through the house would be a good idea) so maybe I’ll get chance to sow today, but it’s more likely to be tomorrow as I have a massive pile of ironing that really needs to be tackled.

I also put the onions and garlic into some compost in some seed trays to get them started – I know I need to put them in the ground, but I need to dig the plot first, so thought at least if I get them started whilst I dig the plot (either tomorrow or Friday) it would help progress them on a bit.  I know this works as I did it a few years ago while I prepared the beds before planting.  Also if they do set some roots this helps to secure them before planting out so that the birds cannot pull them out quite so easily.

The Greenhouse Is Go. . .

Posted in Gardening tagged , at 9:07 am by vicii

Yesterday I spent the day digging out the bed where my greenhouse was to go, moving the shrubs elsewhere and digging up part of the garden.  I had to pause several times due to the weather, and in the end I was actually constructing the greenhouse whilst it was snowing – still, it was all worth it as now it is up and ready to go.  All I have to do now is buy some potting compost (I already have my seeds and trays) then I can get ready to grow…

Digging vs Knitting

Posted in Gardening, Knitting tagged , , at 3:18 pm by vicii

OK, so I had planned on digging in the garden today – and it is such a beautiful day – however then I remembered that I had today booked in as a leisurely day for me!  Why? Well my son is on a school trip; he left yesterday morning and will be back tomorrow night.  This is the first day in a long time when I have had the house to myself and haven’t needed to drop him off at school in the morning and then pick him up again – which really breaks my day in half.  Therefore I planned to have an uninterrupted day where I can just sit and watch the TV or some films and get some serious knitting done… baby permitting.

Fortunately baby Izzy have been perfectly well behaved, I have managed to get two loads of washing done and out on the line (or airer as the line got full up quite quickly) and tidied the house up so I haven’t been completely lazy.

Now however I am making the most of the afternoon and am currently (bar this blog) sat with a nice cup of tea desperately trying to finish off a fitted tank top that I started a while ago.  I’m practically finished now, I just need to knit up the rib on the neck and the armholes.

Fitted Tank Top (WIP)

Hopefully I will receive my package of wool and pattern for my Noni bag this week, hence my determination to finish this tank top soon.  I hope to complete the neck today at the very least then maybe I can work on the armholes over the next few days.  It’s my OH’s birthday on Friday and so I hope to bake a cake to surprise him with, so I can’t do too much knitting otherwise I will never bake the cake…. anyway, time to get back to my leisurely afternoon (I think I might even have a glass of wine soon!)

Greenhouse – Part II

Posted in Gardening, Green tagged , , , , at 3:36 pm by vicii

I spoke to my dad about the greenhouse, and bless his cotton socks, he’s told me that he will buy it for me… this is great news for me since he’s buying me the £60 one – in fact he ordered it earlier today when I was around their and it should be delivered on Wednesday.  I had a subconcious budget of £100 to spend for all the stuff for my veg garden, and with him buying the greenhouse, this will reduce my budget considerably… thank you dad

Therefore, I plan to dig a plot for it tomorrow (all being well) since where I intend to put it currently has a flowerbed with shrubs, so I will need to re-locate those

I am planning to buy one of these plastic greenhouses in order to propogate my plants this year, I was just looking at one of the simple affairs with about 4 staging shelves – however after checking out both the Woolies and Wilko websites I am now confused as to what to buy.  For a few extra pounds you can get more space (which will be ideal seeing as I’m planning to grow lots) but in Wilko there are about 4 different types to choose from; I can have a lean-to, a hexagonal one, a normal one, or the original mini one that I was planning on getting…

I have to go to the dentist on Monday so I think that I will pop into Wilko’s and actually have a look at them in store since there often have them on display.  Hopefully this will make my choice easier… Having said that I’ve just had another look and they also sell a greenhouse complete with staging (I would have to buy it in addition to the greenhouse otherwise) for £60 so I think this would be the best option as it will make best use of the space in the greenhouse.  Only £60 is much more than I was planning to spend however I have to keep reminding myself that I have to spend money on this in order to save money – if I don’t spend now to grow my own then I will be spending every week in the supermarket and the quality of the food will be inferior to what I can grow fresh!

Normally I can be quite impulsive, but I think I might check with my dad and see what he thinks.  However it would be nice if I could buy it tomorrow, since I have some seed trays being delivered next week (which I bought on eBay really cheaply).  Then I would just need to buy some potting compost and I can at last start to grow some food…. after all, I’ve been planning to do this for ages and really need to get started

Vegetable Sowing Plan

Posted in Gardening, Green, Projects, Useful Sites tagged , , , , , at 10:06 am by vicii

Yesterday I finally managed to decide on a sowing/planting schedule for the vegetables in the garden.  I also agreed with the OH on Saturday that it would be a good idea to cut off the bottom of the garden with some fencing and a gate to separate the vegetable plot from the rest of the garden and in time we can also get a greenhouse and shed built down there; I wasn’t so sure that he would be happy about me taking a large part of the garden for veg but he seemed more than up for it!

A “before” picture of the garden. This is exactly as it looked when we moved in at the end of December, as yet I haven’t touched it. The red line is where I plan the have the vegetable garden, the grey area where the greenhouse will eventually go and the brown bits are where the veg beds will be.I plan to garden organically (as I have always done in the past) so know full well that I may have a good few problems this year until the garden is up and running properly, and I will be using a three bed rotation with one permanent bed. Bed sowing as follows (yet to determine varieties and buy them – that is the next task):

Going to Pot

Posted in Baby, Gardening, Moan tagged , , , at 1:42 pm by vicii

I had planned to spend yesterday afternoon deciding what vegetables to grow in the garden and plan a sowing rota (after reading Kethry‘s blog and realising that I haven’t done this yet!).  Unfortunately time disappeared… school rang at lunchtime to inform me that DS didn’t have any sandwiches and didn’t fancy any of the school meals, so I have to make his sandwiches and drop them off to him – I had run out of time in the morning and asked him if he could make his lunch which he often does when I’m running late, he managed to do all of his lunch but forgot the sandwiches – so this ate into my day, and then I found out that he hadn’t eaten them anyway as apparently he wasn’t hungry by the time I delivered them to school, therefore I put them straight into the fridge and he’s having them for lunch today.

I also planned to get rid of my ironing pile yesterday, I don’t believe how long it took, it felt like it took all day.  However it wasn’t all lost since I managed to make some chicken stock from a carcass I had from jointing a chicken at the weekend.  I put some of the stock in the fridge ready to made a casserole with tonight and the rest I used to make some carrot and coriander soup which should feed me for lunches all (or most of) this week.  I also managed to vaccum downstairs and get dinner ready so I don’t feel like I was sat on my backside all day.

The same cannot be said for today however, I fed Izzy this morning, then got ready to go into town (had another Amazon sale on Sunday so needed to go to the post office) but needed to get the book parcelled up, then the washing out on the line, then the nappy delivery arrived – and I had to get from the neighbour since I was outside with the washing!  Eventually made it into town, got everything I needed and walked back – it was midday!!  Where did the time go?  Izzy was fast asleep in her buggy, so managed to get a cup of tea and load the nappies in the wash before she woke up for a feed.  I’ve practically just finished feeding her and so now I’m going to have some soup, hang the nappies on the line, then it will be 3 o’clock and time to pick DS up from school….. then time to start on dinner, then feed Izzy again…… argh!!  When will I get chance to sit down….
